Degree: Bachelor in Medicine and general Surgery
Duration: The duration to implement the program in Iraq is six years (equal to 200 weeks) that is based on addressing common health needs and problems.
Number of admitted students: The College received about 80- 120 student each year according to the result of central admission
The objectives of undergraduate medical education aim at producing medical graduates who are competent and equipped to respond to the health needs of individuals and their families based on a service that is compassionate, caring and takes into consideration human rights and gender equity. The competencies required in the student at the point of graduation were defined and include the skills of continuing professional development.
The skills obtained by completing our program represent essential factual knowledge, impart requisite professional skills in communication and patient management, develop critical thinking and analytical ability and enhance the development of desirable professional behavior and values founded in medical ethics relevant to the Iraqi culture. Also the curriculum provides opportunities for self-directed learning, for taking optional/elective units and for gaining exposure to a wide range of institutional and community experiences.
Students spend at least three academic years of their training in direct contact with individuals, families and the community with increased clinical responsibility under supervision. Students are exposed to patients and community as early as possible.
The basic science teaching is relevant to the overall objectives of the medical school, and such relevance is apparent to the faculty and students. Thus, basic science courses illustrate the importance of principles being taught to the understanding of health and disease, both at the individual and community level.
Our student will develop life-long knowledge and learning skills in internal medicine, that enable the graduates from our medical school to deal with the diseases and train them for the diagnosis of puzzling medical problems, in the ongoing care of chronic illnesses, and in caring for patients with more than one disease. Also they will be working to improve efficiency and quality in delivering healthcare services to Iraqi patients. The following is a summary of the main medical areas and classes which will be covered in our program.
Surgery: Lectures, interviews, direct examination to the patients in different surgical specialties and group discussions with students provide valuable insights about how to strengthen curricula. We provide the knowledge and teach the students the practical, theoretical and communication skills needed to become a safe, compassionate and ethical doctor of the future.
Gynecology: The aim of gyne .& obst. is to acquire knowledge of common conditions in obst.& gyne. And Genito -urinary medicine and their management and to understand the principles of routine antenatal ,intra-and postpartum care and conduct normal deliveries under supervision and to gain an understanding of the available methods of fertility control and the ability to counsel patients accordingly
Pediatrics: The principle aim of the pediatrics course is to supply students with the necessary tools to be able to take a history from the parent(s) and / or child, and perform a competent clinical examination, to know about common conditions of childhood as well as less common and finally to understand growth and development and the impact illness is plotted on growth charts and this is illustrated by anthropometric measurements like centile charts for head circumference, length/ height، body weight in addition to updated notes regarding immunization ( vaccination) as part of preventive medicine to simplify it much easier in addition to attend consultation out patients , morning round, seminars and good knowledge about objective structured clinical exam (OSCE). in teaching hospital for maternity and childhood.
Pathology: Pathology is a science of medical college. It is generally defined as the study of disease. More specifically, it is considered a bridging science of both basic and clinical science. So, it is a Para clinical science. We will try covering the principles of general pathology that are concerned with the basic reactions of cells and tissues to the injurious agents that underlie all disease. We will also attempt to explain the pathologic techniques (morphologic, molecular, microbiological, and immunologic) are used for diagnosis of disease, Prepare the student to work in medical fields &develop skill in description of morphological changes (gross and histological) of good Examples of diseases.
Pharmacology: Our syllabus includes lectures, laboratory sessions and seminars. The students will get knowledge how to chosen appropriate drugs for disease and all information of these drugs regarding side effect, drug interaction and others. In lab we used animal to show how drug working and show there effect. There are weekly seminars about topics that we found important and necessary. Exams include two semesters with midyear and final exam.
Physiology: the mission is to provide the medical students with required knowledge and skills which help them to understand the normal physiology of human body organs and relate these normal mechanisms to pathological mechanisms in diseased organs. We will provide an opportunity for students to have detailed information about the physiological measurements through laboratory activities by the use of different medical appliances like microscopes, spectrophotometer, hematology analyzer and others.
Forensic medicine is a branch of medical sciences that primarily concerned with the study of medical cases that imply a legal aspect. The aim is to determine the cause of death and the nature of death depending on the medical history and the postmortem examination. The source of knowledge that the doctors’ use is either general, from his knowledge in general medicine, such as surgery, anatomy, physiology, gynecology… etc, or from specific knowledge in forensic pathology
Principles of medicine: To make the students fluent with medical and pathological terms with a high knowledge about the ecology of health and prevention of diseases.
Biochemistry: the course objectives are to produce competent medical biochemists who are able to demonstrate comprehensive understanding of biochemistry as well as applied disciplines. The students will have acquired the competence pertaining to basic instrumentation and procedures pertaining to biochemistry that are required to be practiced in community and at all levels of health care system. They acquire skills effectively in interpreting all laboratory reports and have the competence to perform relevant investigations which will help to diagnose important medical conditions. Their skills will be used effectively in communicating the diagnosis to the patients and families. They should be able to demonstrate empathy and have a human approach towards patients and respect their sensibilities.
